Prologue: The Question
Your Entry to The Library of Unwritten Futures
You are chosen.
The words do not arrive as sound. They bloom inside your skull like frost on glass, delicate, inevitable, and cold enough to stop your breath. You are standing in the atrium of the Library, though you have no memory of walking here. There is no floor beneath your feet, only the suggestion of one—an absence of falling. The air tastes of parchment and ozone, as though every book ever written has been struck by lightning and left to smolder.
Look up.
The shelves rise without end, a honeycomb of light. Each volume glows from within, not with the soft amber of bedside lamps but with the hard white of surgical LEDs, the bruised violet of dying stars, the arterial red of a heart under stress. They are not arranged by author or genre or alphabet. They are arranged by ‘consequence.’ A book on the left might be the future where you learned to play the cello at forty and died at ninety-two, beloved and deaf from applause. The book on the right might be the future where you never learned at all and died at forty-two, alone and unheard. Between them, a thousand others shimmer—some thick as encyclopedias, some thin as communion wafers—each one a life you have not yet lived.
You reach out. Your hand does not tremble. It should, but it does not. The nearest book is warm, pulsing like a throat. Its cover is not leather or cloth but something that feels like skin stretched over memory. There is no title. There is only a sigil: a heart split by a lightning bolt, the halves still beating.
The Library speaks again, and this time the voice is not words but pressure—behind your eyes, between your ribs, in the hollow where grief has taken up residence.
Rule One: Twenty-four hours.
A day. One rotation of the Earth you left behind. You will open the book, step through its pages, and live the life written there from sunrise to sunrise. When the final page turns, you will be pulled back to this exact moment—your clothes unchanged, your coffee still cooling on the table, the voicemail from your mother still blinking red. But the day will have happened to you. Every second. Every scar.
Rule Two: You keep what you learn.
The knowledge will root in your marrow. The skills will settle in your fingers. The losses will lodge in your throat like fishbones. You may return with the muscle memory of open-heart surgery or the muscle memory of heartbreak. You may return fluent in a language that does not yet exist. You may return with the taste of a fruit that will not be cultivated for another century. Whatever you carry out will be yours forever, even if the future itself is erased.
Rule Three: One vote—publish or erase.
When you return, you will stand before the Curator—a child-shaped silhouette stitched from starlight and silence—and you will cast your vote. “Publish,” and the future you experienced will begin to overwrite the present, thread by thread, until it becomes the only timeline that ever was. “Erase,” and the book will burn without flame, its ashes scattered across the void where unborn possibilities go to die. There is no abstention. There is no appeal. There is only the weight of a single choice and the knowledge that every other version of you will live or die by it.
You hesitate. Of course you do. You are human, and humans are built for hesitation the way birds are built for the sky. But the Library is patient. It has waited since the first story was told around the first fire. It will wait until the last star burns out. It has all the time that never was.
The book in your hand grows heavier. Not with mass—mass is negotiable here—but with ‘potential.’ Inside its pages, a nine-year-old girl laughs in a language made of heartbeats. Inside its pages, a city runs on the rhythm of a million artificial hearts, each one a tiny sun. Inside its pages, you are both the inventor and the invention, the healer and the wound.
You think of the chapel where you collapsed. You think of the operating theater where you held your daughter’s heart in your gloved hands and felt it stop. You think of the silence that followed…not the absence of sound, but the presence of something worse. A silence that rings. A silence that has a name.
The Library knows your name. It knows the precise decibel of your grief. It knows the exact moment you decided that love was a liability. It offers you a trade.
Open the book, and you will live a day where no heart ever fails. Where your daughter wakes up laughing. Where you never have to whisper “I’m sorry” into the dark. But on that day, grief will be obsolete. Tears will be a glitch. The word ‘loss’ will be stricken from every language, and with it, the word ‘depth.’
Close the book, and you return to the chapel. To the voicemail. To the silence that rings. To the life where your daughter is a memory you carry like a bullet you cannot dig out.
The choice is yours. It always was.
The Curator appears at your elbow, small as a child, bright as a supernova. It does not speak. It simply extends a hand. In its palm lies a bookmark—thin as a scalpel, sharp as regret. When you take it, the book will open. When you take it, the day will begin.
The pages part like theater curtains. Light pours out, white and merciless. You step through.
The last thing you hear before the future swallows you is the Library’s final question, spoken not to your ears but to the hollow where your heart used to be:
Would you trade your grief for a heart that never stops?
